On January 26th, BC Premier David Eby announced the province will be working with school districts to ensure restrictions are in place for the use of cell phones by students in schools beginning in September 2024. Coast Mountains School District currently has guidelines in place to support this statement by the premier. Policy 1090: Bring Your Own Technology provides discretion at the classroom level by teachers pertaining to the use of personal devices by students, including cell phones or other smart devices, and this is exercised in CMSD schools.
Despite this policy and in response to this provincial narrative, the School District’s Policy Committee is engaging with all partners to receive feedback at this time to support dialogue related to our policy's effectiveness in keeping students both engaged in learning and safe during their time in school. Surveys have been created for school district employees, as well as for the collective of students, parents, caregivers, community members and partners, to share their thoughts and inform potential revisions to the policy or it’s guidelines.
